You Know You're From Bellevue When . . .

Submitted by Carol Kouba Bosse

You spent hours and tons of quarters playing video games at Top Dog.

You remember Bikes, Kousgaard's, Van's Department Store, Haney's Shoes, Bank of Bellevue, First National Bank of Bellevue, Sally's, Wolbers, Hested's, Pizza Oven, Bronco's, Helm's, Carol Lee's, Hinky Dinky, Grant's, K-Mart, Woodle Hardware, Brook's Auto, The Purple Shanty, Anthony's, The Big Store, Al's Deli, 8-11, TG&Y, Johnson's Rexall, Roxy Theater, Tiller's house with the peacocks, and the stinky feedlot.

You've ever watched or participated in the Arrows to Aerospace parade.

You know where the Long and Winding Road takes you.

You always wanted to believe the Bellevue Queen actually floated on the river.

You find yourself cheering more for the high school bands than any athletic team.  (Umm, that NEVER happened – we would have been kicked out of Pep Club! – M.G.)

You remember shopping at Brandeis and admiring that freaky chandelier by the escalators.  (I remember catching the bus on the corner and skipping school to go downtown to Brandeis- M.G.)

Big fun was cruising the strip between McDonalds and Burger King on a Friday night.

You have fond memories of Goodrich Dairy and Valentino's.

You remember the stop signs in barrels.

You remember when Bellevue got a Cinema Fourplex on Ft. Crook Road.

You "graduated" from Mrs. Entenmen's dance school at the annual recital at the Orpheum.

You took piano lessons from Ms. Gately, behind Bellevue East.

You remember when the Putt-Putt (the OLD one) was where Bronco's was.

Jewell Park has special meaning to you.

You knew to slow down for the speed trap on that road between Galvin and Betz Road.

You went to Sprite Night at Peony Park and realized there is a world outside of Bellevue.

You bought beer (underage) at Reds on Hwy 75.

You went to Dr. Longo or Dr. Francis.

You remember when Bellevue University was Millard Lumber.

You painted your graduation year on the water tower.

You remember when there was just one high school and one junior high.

You knew a Kallman, a Plambeck, a Desjardins, a Longo, a Ritchey, a Tesar, a Kouba, or a Balcer.

You knew a Ryder, a Cook, a Holtmeyer, a Troia, or a Targy.

You knew a Rush, an Eby or a Barelman.

Your prom or homecoming was held at the Bellevue High School cafeteria.

Going to the Old Market was a big deal.

Shopping at Westroads or Regency Park was an even bigger deal.

You would caravan over to that bar in Council Bluffs when the drinking age in Iowa was 18.

You can remember the name of the bar in Council Bluffs where everyone drank at 18.

You remember the Blizzard of '75 and no other snowstorm has been bigger.

You remember when Bellevue West was in the middle of a corn field and Cornhusker was a gravel road.

You picked gravel out of your knees after a track meet at Mission Junior High.

Mr. Rotella kicked boys in P.E. class.

You rocked out at the Civic Auditorium to Van Halen, Triumph, Queen, Styx, Beach Boys, or Black Sabbath.

Elementary school field trips were either to Fontenelle Forest or the Henry Doorly Zoo.

You've eaten a Stella Burger.

You had a Panda Party at Skateland.

You can't find any images of your hometown on the Internet!

You watched the pizza makers and player piano/piano player at Shakey's.

You remember when 9th grade was still Junior High School.

You feared the albinos in Fontenelle Forest.

You know instinctively that Offutt is spelled with two t's.

You could get on base without being stopped at the guard shack.

You know that 59 stands for Sarpy County and your friends from out of state can't believe you know where someone is from by looking at their license plate.

You were a "big" kid when you were allowed to cross the Hwy to go to Skateland, alone.

Honda Pete

I bought my first (and only) motorcycle, a  Honda 90, from Honda Pete (Don Peterson).  He & his wife Artice owned the Kiddie Clothes (sp)  upstairs and the motorcycle shop was in the basement.

Dennis Gilbert
Billie's

I was the fry cook from 4-8 in Billie's.  Made $1 an hour....and lived like a king.  Used to hear the motorcycles running up the ramp from the basement of the Honda shop all the time.  plolice used to come in the back door to get their coffee at Billie's.  Best hot roast beef sandwich in the world.  Real potatos.  real beef, real gravy.  have never found an adequate substitute.
